Chinese Medicine Pharmacology:

Effect: heat-clearing and detoxicating, Supplementing Qi and nourishing Yin
Indications: cough, expectoration, weakness embolism after the illness, anorexia,dry throat, insomnia with restlessness.
Pharmacologic Effect
1.Immunoregulation
(1)Enhancing splenic function: Gynostemma Extract can increase the weight of mouse spleen. lymphocyte in the middle of spleen rupture increases, Conversion Rate of T lymphocyte enhances. mononuclear cells hyperplasia, phagocyte actively.
(2)Whitening effect: gypenosides improves PBWBC, enhance lphagocytic function. It increases the leukocytopenia caused by CTX.
(3)Phagocytosis: Gynostemma polysaccharide has a distinct phagocytosis for enhancing peritoneal macrophage.
(4)DNA adjustment: small dose gypenosides promote lymphocyte DNA compound, large dose can effect an opposite inhibition.
- Anti-aging effect
Gypenosides can prolong the average life of Drosophila, risen the SOD activity of houseflies, mice and livers. It also decrease the lipid peroxidase content and lipofuscin content of elder mice’s serum, heart, brain, liver
3.Anti-tumor effect
Gypenosides has a prominent inhibition on various tumour cells.
4.protective effect to myocardial infarction & myocardial ischemia
Both internal and external experiment has verified that injecting gypenosides has protective effect on myocardial infarction and damagement caused by myocardial ischemia-reperfusion.
5.Antiplatelet aggregation effect
Both internal and external experiment shows GP inhibition to ADP, arachidonic acid and platelet aggregation caused by collagen.
- Enhance physical strength and anti-fatigue effect.
Gynostemma Extract, saponins and TGPs experiment shows mice’s swimming time , climbing time and Load swimming all increased. With the intragastric administration of gynostemma Extract for 14 consecutive days, the mice can keep a high blood glucose level during swimming, and decrease the muscle glycogen loss. This might be an important reason why gynostemma extract anti-fatigue.
7.Hypolipidemic effect.
0.25%～0.5% gynostemma extract has an apparent decline to mice serum, total liver cholesterol and triglyceride. Drenching Gypenosides can restrain the rise of total cholesterol and triglyceride for hypercholesterolemia mice. and also decrease the total cholesterol, triglyceride and low density lipoprotein for hyperlipidemia quails, also protect their liver diffuse liposis and atherosclerosis formation.
With the intragastric administration of gynostemma Extract to for 3 consecutive days, alloxan diabetes mice lower blood glucose.
8.Enhance sexual function
After gavaging gnostemma extract to mice, the male’s testis and prostate glands increased and the female’s uterus weight increased. It shows that gnostemma extract has androgen and estrogen effect.
- Liver-protecting effect
(1)Acute liver injury control: Gypenosides protect liver injury cause by alcohol, decrease
liver tissue fat degeneration, prevent lipid peroxidation damage of liver cell membrane and subcellular structure from oxygen free radical. Protecting liver cell membrane integrality, improving liver microcirculation, promote toxins removement.
(2)Anti-liver fibrosis effect: Gypenosides decreases aspartate transaminase,alanine aminotransferase, and increases globulin ratio; decreases collagen. pathology observation discovered that liver collagen became thinner, it verified the effect.
(3)Gynostemma and the extract can decrease liver and serum lipid, heilsam for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
(4)Gypenosides 50mg/kg restrains rise of serum transaminase caused by carbon tetrachloride. Decreasing hepatic tissue lipid peroxidase content, reduce the damage to liver.
10.Other effects.
(1)Promoting coronary blood flow: Gynostemma extract increases the heart coronary flow, slows down heart rate, mainline has a hypotensive effect.
(2)Gynostemma extract has effect of sedation,analgesic and hypnosis.
(3)Gynostemma extract has effect of oxidation, anti-injury. It protects skin and promotes ulcer healing.
